Why is my pool heater not heating?

The first useful details are the heater type, its model and what the display says. A gas heater and an electric heat pump can behave differently.

Is it off, stopping or heating slowly?

Describe the behavior precisely. Does the heater fail to start, start and stop, display a message, or run without reaching the temperature you want? Record the requested temperature and the displayed water temperature.

Look at the normal user controls to note pool versus spa mode, the heating setting and the schedule. A heater’s local controls and the pool automation may both be relevant. Follow your model’s manual when using its controls.

What might an assessment consider?

  • Whether the controls are calling for heat and which schedule is active.
  • Whether normal circulation is available and whether a flow message is displayed.
  • The heater type, model, equipment condition and connected automation.
  • For heat pumps, operating conditions, airflow and available heating time.
  • Whether the equipment stops with a repeatable fault or the concern is slow heating.

Record the message; do not bypass it.

Photograph the exact display message and the model label. Different models can use similar wording for different conditions. A flow or other fault message needs the model-specific troubleshooting guidance.

Do not bypass safety switches, open electrical or gas compartments, or repeatedly reset a persistent fault. Leave internal diagnosis and repair to a qualified professional. A normal-looking display does not establish that the heater is operating correctly.

Send a useful heater-service request.

Include your address, heater model, equipment photo, display message, requested and actual temperature, and the time available for heating. Tell us whether it is a pool or spa and whether you recently changed a pump, schedule or control setting.

Visit pool heater installation and repair to discuss the next step. If the main symptom is weak circulation throughout the system, include those details and review our pump repair service.

Model-specific information matters.

This guide explains observations to share with a pool professional. It does not identify the fault in your equipment. Refer to the manual for your exact model.
